Toll Group & Origin Energy launch electric rigid truck to drive more sustainable LPG delivery

Toll Group has deployed a Volvo FE Electric 4x2 rigid truck into its fleet to support Origin Energy’s LPG cylinder delivery operations, marking a significant step toward reducing emissions in Australia’s heavy logistics sector.

The new vehicle is purpose-built for urban delivery and the unique requirements of LPG distribution, offering a daily range of 200–275 km per duty cycle while reducing 39 tonnes of CO2 annually compared to traditional vehicles.

This innovation demonstrates how electric transport can meet demanding operational needs while cutting carbon emissions and noise pollution. “This project shows that electric heavy vehicles are not just a concept, they’re a practical solution for complex supply chains,” said Michael Rugendyke, President Resources & Industrials at Toll. “Our partnership with Origin Energy highlights how collaboration can accelerate the transition to cleaner logistics.”

The initiative forms part of Toll’s $67 million investment in battery-electric heavy vehicles and charging infrastructure, co-funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) under its Driving the Nation program. This program will see 28 electric vehicles integrated into Toll’s fleet nationwide. General Manager of Origin LPG Amber Fennell said, “Our partnership with Toll has enabled us to develop this electric vehicle specifically designed for LPG cylinder delivery.”

The Volvo FE Electric rigid truck is now in service in metropolitan Brisbane, delivering LPG cylinders between Origin facilities. The trial will provide valuable insights into performance, charging cycles, and operational efficiency, informing future low-emission transport strategies.
